George Jonas was already dying in a ditch. He was not shot from a distance. Sheriff Oscar Adkins walked up to him, put a pistol against his stomach, and pulled the trigger. A coworker ran to help him and caught a bullet for it, then crawled into the same ditch to die next to him.
